More offensive and ridiculous than the claim that Obama is a ‘secret muslim’ is the notion (or reality?!) that being muslim is something that one should hide.

For instance:

After years of battling false claims and viral emails alleging that he is a Muslim, President Obama hasn’t gotten far among Republican voters in Alabama and Mississippi – about half still believe he is Muslim and about 1 in 4 believes his parents’ interracial marriage should have been illegal, a new poll shows.

-Poll: Obama’s a Muslim to many GOP voters in Alabama, Mississippi

And personally, hearing that kind of talk evokes the same feeling I get when some christians try to ‘defend’ Jesus by arguing that “Jesus wasn’t really Jewish.” What the hell is wrong with being Jewish or Muslim or whatever?

Don’t get me wrong. I think Islam, Judaism, Christianity, and all those religions are wrong factually and morally, but this kind of xenophobic, McCarthian bigotry is a fail no matter which religion - or lack thereof - one ascribes to.

It’s also un-American.

The Yom Kippur service I attended this year was specifically about (and I think for) the (many) atheists in our audience who are of empirical mind and belief, not big fans of anthropomorphizing the universe, and who were there mainly because they have kids and this is what we do on high holy days.

Main point in the sermon after the mourner’s kaddish being “Do unto others” and the rest of Jewish writing being “commentary.”

“Yes…your life might be sucking a dick (clearly I am paraphrasing here), but hey…we’re Jewish.  Have Friday evening supper and enjoy your kids.  Doesn’t have to be Jewish food…taco casserole is fine.  Just be with your family, cherish them, and take from our culture what you can.  That’s what it’s really all about.”

Afterward, my rabbi and I talked about outer space, Ayn Sof and a previous night we’d had trying to work out dark matter and background radio noise which pervades our galaxy (I watch too much SyFy Channel).

I really like your blog…you’re one of my favorite Americans, and between us, you really should be a rabbi.
